The New Zealand Government’s Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Programme is pleased to offer a Geothermal Energy Project Management course for Indonesian and Philippines scholars, supported by the New Zealand International Development Cooperation Programme.
The Geothermal Energy Project Management short course has been specifically designed for the New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarships Programme. It is an intensive course for mid-level professionals with at least 5 years relevant work experience and intermediate level English Language Proficiency, who are working on Geothermal Energy development projects.
This is a five-week (continuous) residential course to be held in Auckland, New Zealand. This is a fully funded scholarship covering course fees, visa costs (excluding passport fees), accommodation and other programme related expenses. The course is designed and delivered to be relevant to the ASEAN context and incorporate real-world case studies, as well as field trips and workplace visits.
The course management and delivery will be led by the Programme Director, Dr John O’Sullivan and is managed and supported by the Geothermal Institute team. While the course does not constitute a formal tertiary qualification it will provide scholars with unique insights into New Zealand approaches and best practice in each sectoral study area.
On completion each scholar will be awarded a completion certificate from the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Programme.
The Geothermal Energy Project Management course timeline is as follows:
Travel to New Zealand : Week beginning 13 April 2026
Course Start Date : Monday 20 April 2026
Course Finish Date : Tuesday 19 May 2026
Depart New Zealand : Wednesday 20 May 2026
This course will be delivered on a full-time basis in in Auckland, New Zealand. Successful applicants should be available to travel to New Zealand the week prior to course commencement and will receive an orientation on arrival.
This course is designed for professional in a middle or senior management position (with at least five years’ relevant work experience) in the geothermal energy sector.
Participants should have basic level computer literacy and numeracy skills and Intermediate level English language proficiency.
To be eligible for a Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship, all the following statements must be true:
From the date my application is submitted, I will have lived in my country of citizenship for the last two years or more.
Exception for diplomatic corps and their family: A member of the diplomatic corps or a dependant of a member of the diplomatic corps, living outside their own country, can apply for a Scholarship.
I am not a citizen or permanent resident of any of the following countries: New Zealand, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, any European Union country, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, Norway, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, or the United States of America.
I will be at least 18 years old at the time I start the scholarship.
I am not currently serving in the military.
Within the last five years, I have not had a New Zealand Scholarship terminated.
Applicants must also acknowledge and agree that:
They have received endorsement from their employer to attend this training programme.
They expect to meet the academic entry requirements (including English language requirements) for their planned training programme.

Duration : Five-weeks, Auckland based programme
Class Times : Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm
Sessions include : Thematic presentations and discussions, site visits, workshops, case studies, guest speakers, project work, reflections on previous day, questions and application.
Module 1 : Introduction to the fundamentals of geothermal energy
Module 2 : Geothermal energy resources and their development
Module 3 : Project management fundamentals and applied project management
Module 4 : Feasibility analysis and business casing of geothermal energy projects
Module 5 : Planning and financing geothermal energy projects
Module 6 : Social and environmental impact assessment and management frameworks of geothermal energy projects
By the end of the course the following Learning Outcomes will be delivered:
Enhanced understanding of geothermal system frameworks, geothermal resource assessment, exploration, drilling, development, and power production. This includes geological, geochemical, and geophysical concepts and data collection, and reservoir modelling.
Improved understanding of the social and environmental impacts of geothermal energy projects, and how to manage these.
Enhanced understanding of how to plan and finance geothermal energy projects.
Enhanced understanding of project management frameworks and principles, including practical application in a geothermal context.
Enhanced decision making and risk management capabilities.
The course will be managed and supported by the Geothermal Institute, University of Auckland and will be led by the Programme Director, Dr John O’Sullivan.
